Wildlife Teeth Aging Program

Wildlife Teeth Aging Program

In partnership with DeerAge.com, the Wildlife Teeth Aging Program was launched in 2021 to compile information on the age of the animals harvested by guided clients. This program will use cementum annuli aging to assess the annual cementum deposits on the roots of mammals’ teeth to determine the age of a harvested animal. The annual deposits create “rings” on the roots which can be viewed and counted under a microscope to more accurately age animals. In time, the Wildlife Teeth Aging Program will create a valuable collection of insightful data on Alberta’s wildlife populations, creating a source of information on the age stratification of populations. APOS members who are interested in participating can contact the office to obtain their teeth aging kits. Non-members who would like more information about teeth aging services should contact DeerAge.com directly. CLICK HERE for the official press release from May 7, 2021.
