ABOUT US Alberta’s outfitters were some of the earliest pioneers of the tourism industry in our province, with the first guided hunts taking clients into Alberta’s rugged backcountry in the late 1800s. Today our society represents 500 professional outfitters and nearly 1,600 hunting guides, creating a total economic contribution of $327 million to Alberta's gross domestic product.

ABOUT APOS In 1997, the Alberta Professional Outfitters Society (APOS) was established as a delegated administrative organization (DAO) for the Government of Alberta. APOS’ delegated responsibilities include licensing the province’s guides and professional outfitters, managing the distribution of guided hunting allocations, and holding members accountable to a Code of Ethics. We provide members with competitive liability insurance, a voice within government, and advocacy on key issues.

AWARDS RECOGNIZING THE BEST OF ALBERTA’S PROFESSIONAL GUIDES AND OUTFITTERS
The Guide of the Year Award is presented annually to a guide that demonstrates professionalism, positivity, knowledge, and competence in the field. Nomination forms are available here.
The Outfitter of the Year Award is presented annually to an outfitter for their professionalism, ethics, and commitment to the outfitting industry in Alberta. Nomination forms are available here.
The Service Award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated a commitment to serving the outfitting industry, either in their role as a staff of the Government of Alberta or through a connection otherwise. Nomination forms are available here.
Why do wildlife scores matter? The Trophy Awards are more than hunters looking for “bragging rights” – this information is an important part of our hunting heritage. Scorekeeping is a valuable part of conservation and future wildlife management. Organizations like the Pope and Young Club and the Boone and Crockett Club have been collecting wildlife records for many years. These records tell stories about the health of a population, as high scores represent a mature animals and a balanced age-class structure in a healthy population. Records build a timeline of both positive and negative trends in wildlife health. The ongoing presence of “trophy quality animals” is a wildlife stewardship triumph that should be celebrated by hunters, outfitters, and the general public. Members of APOS can submit Trophy Awards at no cost by providing a B&C or P&Y scoresheet. For more information on the entry criteria, please email info@apos.ab.ca.
The Legacy Awards were established to celebrate the long term commitment members have to the outfitting industry within Alberta. A career in outfitting has its ups and downs, and requires sacrifice, patience, and resilience. Legacy Awards recognize two milestones – 20 years of service and 40 years of service. Nomination forms are available here. To view past recipients CLICK HERE.

Each of our outfitters are listed, along with the species they provide hunts for. Additionally, there are informative articles about each of the species available in the province along with tips for travelling to Alberta.
BIGHORN SHEEP Find a Bighorn Sheep Outfitter Almost all sheep outfitting in Alberta is done in the old time style, with packhorses and tent frame camps. The exception is an archery-only zone near Canmore, where much of the hunting is easily accessed on foot. These November hunts can be bitterly cold. During the rifle season in September and October, most of the outfitters book 14-day hunts
BISON Find a Bison Outfitter Bison may be hunted anywhere they are found in northern Alberta, except within the national park and within a new Bison Protection Area in northwestern Alberta, where they have been recently re-introduced. This may be one of the toughest hunting experiences on the continent!
BLACK BEAR Find a Black Bear Outfitter Black bears are hunted both spring and fall. In addition, black bears often feed all day long which adds to the excitement and success. In Alberta the fall black bear hunt can often be combined with other hunts like upland birds, waterfowl, moose, elk and deer. Across much of the province black bears can be baited and this is a popular hunting strategy.

COUGAR Find a Cougar Outfitter Alberta possesses the largest subspecies of cougar on the continent and, as a result, Alberta consistently enters numerous cougars to the annals of the Boone and Crockett and Pope and Young record books. A cougar hunt in Alberta usually begins with the search for a fresh track. For this reason optimum conditions require a recent snowfall.
COYOTE Find a Coyote Outfitter Coyotes are abundant in the province, especially in the prairie, parkland and foothills regions. There is no limit on coyotes in Alberta and pelts taken during the winter prime season are thick and well furred. In general, coyotes may be hunted year round on private lands and from October 1 to February 28 on public lands.
ELK Find an Elk Outfitter Alberta has a growing population of elk that numbers in the neighborhood of 26,000 animals. They are found predominately along the eastern shadow of the Rocky Mountains in the high basins and foothills, although, in recent years, they have been expanding their range into the boreal forest and parkland regions.
MOOSE Find a Moose Outfitter The Boone and Crockett Club has three separate classes of moose, the Alaska-Yukon variety, the Canada moose and the Wyoming or Shiras moose. Alberta's moose fall into the Canada moose subset. Safari Club International classifies the moose found in the South West corner of Alberta as the Shiras moose sub-species
MULE DEER Find a Mule Deer Outfitter Mule deer are widely distributed big game animals in Alberta and biologists estimate their population at around 133,000. They are found from the far southern reaches to the boreal forests of the north-central part of the province and tremendous trophy potential exists in all areas.
PRONGHORN ANTELOPE Find a Pronghorn Antelope Outfitter Pronghorn Antelope hunting has always been a spot and stalk proposition. Contrary to many preconceptions, the prairie is far from flat and the many undulations, rolling hills, swales and coulees often provide ample cover for the hunter that takes time to plan his stalk.
UPLAND BIRDS Find an Upland Bird Outfitter The ruffed grouse is the most abundant upland game bird the boreal fringe offers and is the best ruffy hunting in the province and maybe the continent. Sharp-tailed grouse, spruce grouse and ptarmigan also occur in the boreal.
WATERFOWL Find a Waterfowl Outfitter As with the geese, ducks (particularly mallards) stage in the Peace parklands by the thousands. The abundant mallards share the same food source as the geese and very often mallards are shot prior to and in between goose flights. The large wetlands and lakes of the Peace parklands the boreal forests also offer some of the best diver hunts in the West.
WHITE-TAILED DEER Find a White-tailed Deer Outfitter Alberta is home to three of the top ten typical and non-typical deer ever taken, no other single state or province on the continent has more deer on the list. Alberta has is one of the highest percentages of trophy-class bucks within the population of any jurisdiction in North America.
WOLF Find a Wolf Outfitter Wolf populations are high throughout the Boreal, Foothills and Mountain Regions of Alberta. These wolves can reach 120 pounds in weight and vary in color from light gray to black. Wolves may be hunted by the holder of a wolf license (a nominal fee) from the opening of any big game season until the end of the spring bear season.
INFORMATION ON TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS by Alberta Professional Outfitters Society
Border measures for fully vaccinated American travellers will ease on August 9, 2021. Similar easements should be made for fully vaccinated international travellers on September 7, 2021. APOS has compiled this information to assist you in navigating the new requirements for welcoming your clients into Canada.
Refusal to enter into Canada Old criminal records – even old driving under the influence (DUI) charges – can sometimes cause issues at the border. If you have any type of criminal charge or conviction on your record, even if you have come to Canada previously, it is best to notify your outfitter and take steps to help ensure a smooth entry into Canada. Pardon services are available through a private company based out of Winnipeg, Manitoba: Pardon Services Enterprises Phone: (204) 453-0099 Email: info@pardonservices.ca Website: http://pardonservices.ca
Hunting eligibility Hunters who have a hunting licence suspension, in Alberta or elsewhere, cannot obtain a recreational hunting licence in Alberta. For further information, your outfitter can contact their local Alberta Fish and Wildlife office. Youth hunters are welcome in Alberta, but they must be at least 12 years old to hunt under their own licence. All youth less than 16 years of age require parental permission to purchase a licence, and all youth under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to hunt with a firearm.

Coming to Canada To be considered fully vaccinated, the traveller needs to be fully vaccinated with an approved vaccine for at least 14 days prior to entering Canada. Fully vaccinated travellers will not have to quarantine upon arrival in Canada. They will require a pre-entry molecular test regardless of whether they are driving or flying into Canada, but they will not need a post-arrival test (unless they have been randomly selected to complete a Day 1 COVID-19 molecular test). Additionally, all fully vaccinated travellers must: Be asymptomatic upon arrival; Use ArriveCAN (app or web portal) to submit their travel information 72 hours before their arrival; Provide a quarantine plan and be prepared to quarantine, in case it is determined at the border that they do not meet the necessary requirements. Clients must have proof of a negative molecular test from 72 hours prior to their scheduled departure time. The accepted types of molecular tests for entering Canada are available HERE. Rapid antigen tests are not sufficient for getting into Canada. For your hunters who are taking multiple connecting flights to get to Canada, they should consider the following information about the 72-hour molecular testing window in relation to their scheduled flights. All travellers entering Canada by air or land must use ArriveCAN. Travellers will need to submit their information within 72 hours before their arrival to Canada. Clients can obtain the ArriveCAN app or sign in on a web browser HERE. Upon completion of the ArriveCAN submission, a receipt will be emailed to the traveller, which will need to be shown to the Canada Border Services Agency Officer (CBSA) before entering into Canada. Outfitters may wish to have their clients compile all necessary information in advance of the 72-hour window to help ease the process. Here is a CHECKLIST to help your vaccinated clients prepare to use ArriveCAN. At this time, there have been no changes to the current mandatory 14-day quarantine and testing requirements for unvaccinated travellers, except that the requirement for a 3-night stay at a government-authorized hotel stay will be eliminated on August 9.
Currency exchange The Canadian dollar fluctuates against the US dollar. Exchanging US dollars for Canadian dollars can be done easily at any bank in Canada, or at a currency exchange kiosk at the Calgary and Edmonton International Airports. If you require extra cash, ATMs can be found in any town across the province, but fees may apply. Credit cards are almost always accepted for virtually any purchase throughout Canada – Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted, followed by American Express. Discover Card is not widely accepted in Canada.
2020 Alberta Guide to Hunting Regulations: “Residents who did not receive a Special Licence authorization through the draw process are now eligible to obtain a Special Licence hunting opportunity through the Alberta Professional Outfitters Society. This opportunity is in response to the financial hardship currently experienced by the lack of international travel due to current restrictions. Current licence restrictions still apply.”

Heading Back to the United States Fully vaccinated US citizens returning to the US by air are required to have a negative COVID-19 test result no more than 3 days before travel (or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 in the past 3 months before they board a flight to the US). A rapid antigen test is acceptable for return to the United States. The rapid testing requirement for returning to the US does not apply to entering the US by land. Your client's airline may have resources available to assist with the testing requirement. Most drugstores, including Shoppers Drug Mart, will administer rapid antigen tests in their pharmacies. Appointments are required in advance and results are available within 30 minutes. American clients are also able to obtain this type of testing, upon appointment, at the Edmonton or Calgary International Airports. APOS is currently exploring other options to assist members with the requirements for clients heading back to the US. Frequently asked questions on the Centres for Disease Control (CDC) requirements for entry into the US can be viewed HERE. Upon returning home, Americans must complete another viral test 3-5 days after travel; if the test is positive, they must isolate. Click HERE for more information on the requirements for Americans heading back home. Individual states may have additional travel-related requirements, which clients can find HERE. These are uncharted waters for everyone, so we appreciate your respect, patience, and understanding as APOS works to help support the industry through these new requirements. This email seeks to be a resource for members, but recognize that further changes could occur. To help stay on top of any changes or common questions that arise throughout the season, please continue to watch your emails as much as possible in the weeks and months to come.

TIPS FOR THE TRAVELING HUNTER by Alberta Professional Outfitters Society
Entrance into Canada Regardless of whether you fly or drive to Canada, you will be required to clear Canadian customs, presenting a valid passport at the border crossing. At Canadian customs, you may be asked several questions about the purpose of your trip, the length of your stay, where you live, and the name of your outfitter. The Alberta Professional Outfitters Society (APOS) recommends carrying some form of written verification, such as a contract, to show the address of your destination. Any alcohol, tobacco and firearms must be declared at customs.

Legal firearms for Alberta Your outfitter will provide you with suggestions for specific calibers and cartridges for your targeted game species. In Alberta, it is unlawful to hunt game with a caliber less than .23 or a shotgun caliber/gauge of .410 or less. Centrefire magazines are limited to five-round capacities and shotguns are limited to carrying three rounds. It is unlawful to hunt big game with ammunition that contains non-expanding bullets. This is not an extensive list of regulations. Please contact the Canadian Firearms Program (1-800-731-4000 or www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf) or talk to your outfitter to get more information. You are allowed to bring eligible firearms with you into Canada. Some restrictions apply, so please refer to the Canadian Firearms Program website for definitions of non-restricted, restricted and prohibited firearms: www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf. A simple, one-page Non-Resident Firearms Declaration form must be completed to obtain a temporary Canadian Firearms Permit. Your outfitter will provide this with your hunt contract. This form (5589e) can also be downloaded online or mailed to you in advance. Completing this in advance should reduce the time required to clear customs. You do not need to complete this form for archery equipment. A confirmed declaration costs $25, regardless of the number of firearms listed on it. It is only valid for the person who signs it and the firearms listed on it. If you are coming with others who will be using firearms in Canada, each of you will need to meet these requirements independently. Note that the declaration must be signed in front of a Customs officer.
Importing ammunition Non-residents can import 200 rounds of ammunition duty-free for personal use and/or hunting purposes. If you are flying, most airlines have weight restrictions for ammunition. Alternatively, you can check with your outfitter about the cost and availability of your required ammunition in the area where you will be hunting. In most areas you can purchase common calibers/gauges easily, and in major centers like Edmonton or Calgary, finding a wide selection of hunting ammunition for virtually any firearm should not be a problem.
Bow hunting in Alberta Bow hunting is extremely popular in Alberta. Bow hunters enjoy seasons for most species that start as early as August and last until the end of rifle season. Hunters must purchase a Bow Hunting Permit in addition to their licence. Your outfitter will advise you of all the logistics. All hunting bows must have a draw weight of at least 40 pounds at a 28-inch draw, and all arrows must be at least 24 inches in length and have a broad head with at least 7/8-inch cutting diameter. There are several archery- only zones in Alberta as well. See the Alberta Hunting Regulations at http://mywildalberta.com or contact your outfitter for more information.
Crossbow hunting in Alberta Crossbows are permitted during the regular rifle seasons only. Crossbow hunting is not permitted during the archery seasons in Alberta, except under special permit for mobility-impaired hunters. Crossbows must have a draw weight of at least 100 pounds and broadheads must have a cutting diameter of at least 7/8-inch. Crossbows are not permitted in archery-only zones.
Bringing firearms, bows and ammunition by airline Please contact your specific airline to check their requirements, but in general: Archery Equipment Archery equipment is typically accepted as part of a customer’s baggage allowance. Archery equipment is defined as one or a combination of the following: one bow, one quiver containing arrows, and one maintenance kit. These items must be encased in a container of suffi cient strength to protect the items from damage. Cases containing more than the above-listed items may incur an excess baggage fee. Firearms and Ammunition Most airlines will accept one item of shooting equipment as part of a customer’s checked baggage allowance. One item of shooting equipment usually contains: a rifle case containing two or fewer rifles (with or without scopes), one tool kit, and up to 11 pounds of ammunition, if it does not exceed 200 rounds. Ammunition that is in excess of 11 pounds per passenger or that contains incendiary projectiles is prohibited. When checking a firearm, you must declare that you are checking a firearm. If a security checkpoint is prior to the ticket counter, you must declare the existence of a firearm to security personnel. Present the firearm unloaded and sign a Firearms Unloaded Declaration. You must lock the firearm in a hard-sided, crush-proof container and retain the key or combination. Maintain the entry permits in your possession and ensure ammunition is packed separately from your firearm in the manufacturer’s original package or securely packed in plastic/carbon fiber, wooden, or metal boxes.
What should I wear to hunt in Alberta? There are no regulations in Alberta that require specific clothing colors. Blaze orange is not required. Since weather can change abruptly, layers are key as they allow for adaptability to changing weather patterns. A moisture-wicking base layer, along with a few insulating layers, and a waterproof/breathable outer layer is best. This allows you to layer up when it is cold, and de-layer if it warms up. Warm and flexible gloves, quality headgear, and cozy socks are important. Many hunters choose to wear scent-blocking garments. Camouflage can be tailored for the terrain and conditions you hunt – northern boreal forest, prairie grassland, snow, etc. If you are hunting from a tree stand or ground blind, consider over-boots and over-mitts for added warmth. Finally, ensure all clothing is quiet (soft material). Your outfitter will be able to provide you with specific recommendations to match the time and locale of your hunt.
Alberta’s climate Alberta is known for having warm, dry summers, and cold winters with heavy and frequent snowfall. Fall hunting seasons, however, can have extremely varied weather conditions. During the early archery seasons, often starting in late August and running through September, average temperatures hover between 50 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit. In October, average temperatures drop to about 35 to 45 degrees. November average temperatures are below freezing, at 14 to 32 degrees. December and January see some of the coldest temperatures, regularly dipping to well below zero. However, the Chinook winds in the south have seen winter temperatures rise above 70 degrees for short periods of time! For spring bear seasons, hunters can expect mild temperatures, averaging around 30 to 50 degrees.

Transporting game and trophies Exporting your game back home is relatively simple as long as you export the animal (head, hide, meat, etc.) as personal baggage. Your hunting licence will act as your export permit, so be sure to keep it handy as you leave Canada. You will also need to fill out a US Import/Export Permit (Form 177). Although these can be picked up at customs, the process is simplified if this form is filled out in advance. You may be checked by Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement officers when crossing the border back home. This process should be straightforward, provided you have your WIN number and licence(s) at hand. Know the name of your outfitter and guide, as well as a general idea of where you were hunting. Again, keeping a copy of your contract with you will be helpful. You cannot take home wildlife parts or meat that you did not harvest without an additional export permit. Each species has slightly different export requirements, so check with your outfitter for those specifics and be sure to plan in advance. It is unlawful to allow the edible meat of any game bird or big game animal, except cougar or bear, to be wasted, destroyed, spoiled or abandoned. You are primarily responsible for the care of that meat. Most outfitters can help arrange for your meat to be processed, but due to the limited duration of most hunts, your animal may not be completely processed before your departure. Plan ahead and make arrangements with your outfitter if you intend to take home large quantities of meat. There are many quality taxidermists in Alberta, and your outfitter may even have special rates with some of them. It is wise to find out not only what the expected turn-around times are, but also the costs of shipping it home to you.
CODE OF ETHICS
Members of the Alberta Professional Outfitters Society (APOS) are held to a high standard of professional conduct. It is the responsibility of each APOS member to: understand and apply the APOS Code of Ethics; be familiar with all APOS policies that govern their business practices, treatment of others and general conduct; act in a professional manner and take steps to ensure others involved in outfitted hunting do the same; and cooperate in maintaining professionalism within the industry, including bringing attention to activity or behaviour that may be damaging to APOS.
1) What is a “special licence hunting opportunity through the Alberta Professional Outfitters Society”? Temporary changes were made to the Wildlife Regulation in 2020 to allow outfitters to take residents of Alberta on a guided hunt utilizing an allocation. Traditionally, outfitter allocations established under section 54 of the Wildlife Regulation could only be used by outfitters for non-resident Canadian and non-resident alien clients. The 2020 Alberta Guide to Hunting Regulations is referring to guided hunts that use an outfitter’s allocation.
2) Can I just buy the “special licence” and go on my own without an outfitter? No. The temporary change to the Wildlife Regulation enables an outfitter to guide an Alberta resident hunter on an allocation. As a hunter, you would need to be a client of the outfitter.
n the operation of an outfitting business, a member of APOS shall: Not advertise outfitting services unless he is a holder or permitted user of the allocation or waterfowl privilege to be used. Provide a contract describing the terms and conditions for each hunt. Not mislead or misinform a client when discussing the features of their outfitting area or activities. Maintain proficiency, responsibility and professional standards. Ensure safety is a priority at all times during the delivery of contracted services. Employ competent and knowledgeable guides and maintain supervision of their activities. Maintain the highest practical standards in food preparation and accommodations. Be familiar with and adhere to the rules and regulations that pertain to hunting and outfitting in Alberta. Cooperate and respect the reputation and business of fellow APOS members. Respect the rights and activities of resident hunters. Be willing to make restitution when at fault for breach of contract. Along with their employees, respect and maintain the reputation, standards and goals of APOS and not consciously or directly attempt to harm or discredit APOS.
APOS has a Dispute Resolution Process that provides clients, landowners, employees, and other outfitters with the opportunity to file a complaint pursuant to the Code of Ethics. Complaints can be reviewed by the Ethics and Standards Review Committee. Complainants also have access to third-party mediation services through APOS. APOS is a member of the Foundation for Administrative Justice (FOAJ). For more information on the complaints process, please contact Sander Duffhues, Complaints Coordinator, at Sander@apos.ab.ca or 780-670-7277.
The Alberta Professional Outfitters Society (APOS) is pleased to announce a new partnership with Global Rescue. Global Rescue provides industry leading travel protection services, including access to travel insurance, and medical and security advisory and evacuation. ETHICS & STANDARDS Alberta Professional Outfitters Society members arrange and conduct thousands of successful hunts every year and the vast majority of outfitted hunts are successful for both the client and the Outfitter. When interactions and behaviours don’t meet this standard, however, the reputation of individual APOS members and the industry in Alberta as a whole can be harmed. In the unlikely event of violations of the APOS Code of Ethics or misunderstandings, APOS has a Dispute Resolution Process which ensures an expedient, fair and transparent process of resolution. All violations of the APOS Code of Ethics may be subject to a penalty ranging from letters of reprimand, to fines, to temporary or permanent forfeiture of allocations, to the suspension or loss of an outfitter guide permit and/or guide designation. The APOS dispute resolution process is based on the principles of natural justice which offers benefits to all involved. It is important to note that the process does not follow judicial process. Natural justice upholds the concept of fairness – where justice should be done and is seen to be done. This concept leads to procedures that ensure the decision maker acts in good faith, without bias and grants opportunity for a hearing before a decision is made that may impact any person against whom a complaint has been made. Specific principles of natural justice are: the right to receive notice where there may be action against a person; the right to receive reasons for action; the right to be heard (appear before disciplinary body); the opportunity to challenge or contradict information; and the right to an impartial decision maker. The APOS Board establishes the framework of the Dispute Resolution Process, and the Ethics and Standards committee works at arm’s length to administer the process with administrative support from the APOS office. Please contact APOS at info@apos.ab.ca for more information.

3) Can I go with an outfitter using my general or draw opportunity? Yes, you can hunt with an outfitter using your general or draw opportunity; that was also the case before the Wildlife Regulation changes were made in 2020. Be aware that the best practice established by the APOS Board of Directors is that an outfitter can guide Alberta residents in a Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) where they either hold allocations or privileges for the species being hunted or have the permission of at least 1 outfitter who holds allocations or privileges for that species in the WMU being hunted.
4) Does going on a guided hunt using an allocation affect my draw status? Your draw status will not change if you go on a guided hunt with an outfitter using an allocation. However, if you are successful on your draw, you cannot hold two licences for the same species. For example, if you get drawn for a mule deer as a resident, you can still go on a guided moose hunt with an outfitter, but you cannot go on a guided mule deer hunt. You cannot “double up” for a particular species.
5) How long will these changes be in place? Is this a permanent measure? The opportunity for residents to go on a guided hunt with an outfitter using an allocation will be in place for up to 2 years.
6) How do I find an outfitter? You can search on www.apos.ab.ca under Find an Outfitter by clicking “Guiding Alberta Residents” and the species you are seeking.

About CWD and Transmission Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is caused by a misfolded protein called a prion. All mammals produce normal prions that are used by cells, then degraded and eliminated, or recycled, within the body. When disease-associated prions contact normal prions, they cause them to refold into their own abnormal shape. Scientists believe that prions likely spread between animals through body fluids like feces, saliva, blood, or urine, either through direct contact or indirectly through environmental contamination of soil, food, or water. It is unknown how many years prions can survive in the environment but is suggested this could be into the double digits.
Human Health Although some unpublished research has suggested that CWD could be transferrable from cervids to humans, results of these laboratory experiments have never been reproduced. In short, there is no strong scientific evidence indicating that there is a risk of CWD occurrence in humans.
Control/Containment Strategies There is no known strategy for effectively eliminating or slowing down the spread of CWD. All attempts to slow down the spread and prevalence of CWD are experimental in nature and therefore should be approached in a systematic, hypothesis-based scientific approach to applied management. Results from the experiments should be used to evaluate the hypothesis and adapt strategies if necessary. Using this approach would produce insights valuable to Alberta in the long-term, and potentially helpful to other jurisdictions that have CWD on the landscape.
CWD Resistance and Vaccines Most existing CWD research focuses on the causes and nature of the disease. New research is now also looking at the possible existence of CWD-resistant animals. A greater understanding of this aspect of the science will be essential for assessing current strategies and future options. There is currently no vaccine, but scientists are still exploring the options.
In the last 20 years, our collective knowledge on CWD has grown, but uncertainty on the most effective management approaches remains. Alberta has opted to dramatically increase mule deer harvest rates across many wildlife management units in the southern and eastern parts of the province. All the mule deer in an area could be eliminated, but that will not eradicate CWD, since it can survive for many years in the environment and exists in other species such as moose, elk, and especially whitetail deer. Uniform and oversimplified increases in harvest are not a proven strategy, and Alberta has no mechanism for assessing outcomes from the approach currently being undertaken. If no regulations exist to prevent carcass movement or offer safe locations to dispose of carcasses, increases in harvest could actually increase the spread of CWD as hunters congregate to certain areas and bring harvested animals home to various areas of the province. If efforts are undertaken in Alberta to understand the possible the efficacy of management options, APOS is encouraging a systematic and science-driven approach that has measurable outcomes, so that strategies can be adjusted adaptively as needed. Such an approach could provide practical insights into management that will be relevant well beyond the borders of our province.
WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT FUND Since 2008, APOS' Wildlife Management Fund (WMF) has contributed over $1.8 million to wildlife stewardship and conservation projects throughout Alberta. Funded through the renewal fees paid by outfitters, the WMF contributes to a wide variety of projects including population surveys, species studies, management software and technology, and more. Proposals for funding are reviewed and approved annually by a committee that includes Government of Alberta staff and members of APOS. REPORTS ON PAST PROJECTS
2020 Redcliff Adopt-a-Tree Redcliff Cypress Regional Waste Management Authority is planting trees throughout the northeast portion of their landfill. This project is intended to create a functioning ecosystem that can provide food/water sources, shelter, nesting, fawning and reproduction opportunities for all wildlife species in the surrounding area. Click here to learn more.
2020 ALUS Canada Partnership Four ALUS communities will receive funding for nature-based enhancement projects such as new habitat for wildlife. To read the press release click here. To learn more about ALUS click here.
2020 Alberta Conservation Association: Hunter Survey App The ACA is expanding the moose hunter app (2012-16), partnering with iHunter to capture citizen science wildlife observations from hunters on all wildlife species. To learn more about ACA click here.
2020 Alberta Conservation Association: Landowner Survey An online survey was developed to collect information from Alberta landowners about their perspectives on allowing hunting on their private land. To learn more about ACA click here.
2018 Elk Count Survey APOS provided funding to support an elk count survey in the Hinton-Cadomin winter ranges (WMUs 342, 344, 437, 438, 439) to record observed abundance and composition. The survey found that elk were of lower abundance in these areas compared to 2008, except in the Hinton Town Vicinity. However, it also observed that productivity (number of calves in relation to cows) was very good. Click here for more information.
2018 Aerial Moose Survey An aerial survey for moose was done in WMU 351 in 2018. The most recent survey for this area had been from 2009-10 and had produced a population density of 0.48 moose/km2. In the 2018 survey, a total of 171 moose were observed and the final density abundance was estimated to be 0.36 moose/km2. Click here for more information.
2016-17 Wildlife Population Simulator Software: ALCES Online PopDyn APOS provided support for the development of ALCES Online PopDyn. ALCES Online PopDyn contains current and historic information on wildlife populations, hunting, habitat, land-use, and natural disturbances for all of Alberta. It also has different population dynamics models that allow the user to run future ‘what-if scenarios’ and produce maps, figures and tables of the results. Click here for more information.

WILDLIFE TEETH AGING PROGRAM In partnership with DeerAge.com, the Wildlife Teeth Aging Program was launched in 2021 to compile information on the age of the animals harvested by guided clients. This program will use cementum annuli aging to assess the annual cementum deposits on the roots of mammals’ teeth to determine the age of a harvested animal. The annual deposits create “rings” on the roots which can be viewed and counted under a microscope to more accurately age animals. In time, the Wildlife Teeth Aging Program will create a valuable collection of insightful data on Alberta’s wildlife populations, creating a source of information on the age stratification of populations. APOS members who are interested in participating can contact the office to obtain their teeth aging kits. Non-members who would like more information about teeth aging services should contact DeerAge.com directly. CLICK HERE for the official press release from May 7, 2021.
